They’re just joking

“There’s a reason why games work, it’s because they have restrictions; a certain set of rules - not to live by, but just to get the ball rolling”

They’re just joking is a contemporary work dealing with ideas of folly, mockery and the truths being humour and laughter; the duplicity of a foolish society and the honesty often submerged by comedy. How does our voice impact our perception of mockery? And what play do intentions have when it comes to unravelling the truth behind the self? This work examines the images we choose to create of ourselves and the ones we chose to ignore. What do we want society to perceive of us and how do we fabricate a social image of the optimised self? By embracing the idea of emptiness both spatially and psychologically, the performer is jolted between, and brought face to face with the past, present and future of their many personal identities.
